Identity: The American identity has changed a lot. One big thing that has changed is how women dressed. Traditionally, women wore long dresses that went to the floor, big droopy hats, and layers on layers of clothes. Women were not allowed to show a lot of skin, because it was looked at as sexual. Once the younger generation of girls came around, they wanted to express themselves more by dressing up and looking glamorous. Once girls started to become Flapper girls, tensions started to form between the older and younger generations. Flappers wore shorter dresses, a lot of makeup, showed more skin, wore nail polish, glamorous jewelry, and heels. Older people and parents of flappers did not approve of what they did.
Work, Exchange, and Technology: One of the first major inventions in the 1920's was the automobile. It was first developed with a combustion engine in 1896 by an inventor named Henry Ford, he later started the Ford Motor Company, where he produced affordable automobiles called the Model-T. Ford's Model-Ts became such an success that he sold over 15 million Model-Ts by 1927. Peopling: Another thing that made the 1920's a big deal is jazz. Jazz was the music of the era. Most African Americans moved from the south to play jazz up north. Once jazz became popular, jazz clubs started to get popular and Flappers went to them all the time. This was known as the Harlem Renaissance. Politics and Power: During the 1920's era there was a lot of conflict regarding the banning of alcohol. President Woodrow Wilson introduced the 18th amendment which banned liquor that was manufactured or sold. A lot of Americans went against this law and that lead to a lot of criminals in out country. America And The World: America was In isolation for quite some time. We were in a lot of dept from WWI and our economy was going down the drain. We cut off other countries because we made a foreign policy regarding immigration. Environment and Geography: Germany was responsible for the damage from WWI having to pay for the debt for countries like Great Britain and France. Also the Versailles treaty made Germany give up 13% of their territory. They allied nations didn't want Germany to try to rise up and be the biggest power again. Idea's, Beliefs And Culture: Flappers were a big hit in the generation during this time period. People went to jazz clubs and were more laid back. The Charleston dance was very popular. American idea's beliefs and culture changed a lot because people wanted change in the U.S. |
